Gaff Sails For Sale

Beautifully made world cruising sails for sale: gaff foresail, staysail and yankee plus large Tufnol blocks

Time marches on for all of us and and I have converted from foreyard gaff schooner rig to the easier-to-handle Chinese ketch.  I am selling the fore and aft sails and the square sail. (Mainsail, square sail and its gear have been sold. The gaff foresail, staysail and yankee are still available and can be bought individually.) 

GAFF SCHOONER RIG ALL FORE AND AFTERS SET

The fore and aft sails were made by Dave Bierig of Erie, Pennsylvania, well known for making sails for tall ships including the brig Niagara. They are made of nine ounce Contender, triple stitched and heavily reinforced. The main, foresail and forestaysail have battened leeches. The main is high peaked, we don’t use a topsail. These are extremely well-built sails. 

These sails have done a number of long passages and have otherwise been kept scrupulously covered while at anchor. They have had very little total use and are in flawless condition aside from a bit of minor staining. They have many, many more miles and years in them. None of the sails has ever required a repair, not so much as a single stitch.

The boat is a steel Colvin schooner, the Aderyn Mor design. She is 41’ on deck, 12’6” beam, 5’ draft, loaded displacement 30,000 lb. Total fore and aft area is 846 square feet.

LARGE TUFNOL BLOCKS

These heavy duty blocks are from the running backstay tackle on the gaff schooner rig. They are Gibb No.9s, two doubles with becket, two doubles without becket. They are considerably more robust than the Tufnol blocks being sold today. Overall length 8", sheave diameter 3 1/4", maximum rope size 5/8" (16mm), SWL 2400 lb. All four blocks are swivel, but to prevent the tackles twisting, there is a stainless spot weld on the swivels to prevent rotation which could be easily removed if desired. $350 per pair (one with swivel, one without).
