Gaff Sails For Sale

BUILDING OR REFITTING A SAILBOAT? NEED SOME SERIOUS GAFF SAILS?

Lots of fine boat gear available. Beautifully made world cruising sails for a gaff schooner or possibly a gaff ketch. Welded aluminum spars. Welded aluminum dinghy/lifeboat/workboat. Crosby and Merriman turnbuckles. Danforth Constellation compass with binnacle cover. Marelon/Forespar ball valve and through hull.  Davis sextant. Marinco 30 amp shorepower inlet and more.

We are converting from the beautiful foreyard gaff schooner rig to the easier-to-handle-for-old-folks Chinese ketch.  We are selling our fore and aft sails and the square sail (SQUARE SAIL AND GEAR HAS BEEN SOLD)  We are also selling our welded aluminum spars, aside from the masts which have been cut down and and are being re-used for the junk rig. We are also doing a complete refit inside and out so additional gear is available which is listed at the bottom of this post.

Gaff schooner: All sals set

GAFF SCHOONER RIG ALL FORE AND AFTERS SET

The fore and aft sails were made by Dave Bierig of Erie, Pennsylvania, well known for making sails for tall ships including the brig Niagara. They are made of nine ounce Contender, triple stitched and heavily reinforced. The main, foresail and forestaysail have battened leeches. The main is high peaked, we don’t use a topsail. These are sails built for going around the world the hard way and standing up to anything.

They were put on the boat in 2001. As on any real cruising boat, these sails have done a number of long passages and have otherwise been kept scrupulously covered while at anchor. They have had very little actual use underway and are in flawless condition aside from a bit of minor staining. They have many, many more miles and years in them. None of the sails has ever required a repair, not so much as a single stitch.

The boat is a steel Colvin schooner based on the Aderyn Mor design. She is 41’ on deck, 12’6” beam, 5’ draft, loaded displacement 30,000 lb. She has crossed the Atlantic twice and done three offshore trips to the Caribbean with this rig. These sails would be suitable for any similar sized vessel. Although they are coming off a gaff schooner, they could also be used on a gaff ketch. They would suit many Tom Colvin and Bruce Roberts designs, including  Gazelle, Doxy and Spray. Total fore and aft area is 846 square feet. Welded aluminum booms and gaffs to fit these sails are available. See below.

WELDED ALUMINUM SPARS
6061 aluminum tempered to T6. Ready to bend sails on. Tufnol cheek blocks for reefing lines. All spars were ground to remove oxide, acid etched then coated with one coat of fast drying epoxy, three coats of high build epoxy and two coats of two part urethane. Spars are buff and white. Coatings are still in very good condition except for the odd ding. Easy to modify if not exactly the right length.

Welded aluminum dinghy, work boat, life boat

WELDED ALUMINUM DINGHY/LIFEBOAT
And finally, mighty Roe, our welded aluminum dinghy/lifeboat. With the Chinese rig, we have another three feet of length available on deck so Roe is being replaced with a similar dinghy about two and a half feet longer. Roe was professionally TIG welded using marine grade 1/8" 5052 aluminum. She ain't pretty but she is the toughest and most stable little dinghy you will ever find. We've had five adults and a big dog in her in rough water with no problem and we routinely load her up to the gunwhales when provisioning.

About 8'4" long, just over 4' beam, high freeboard, flotation collar of 6" fenders, watertight compartments in bow and stern for flotation and survival supplies, gunter rig with dacron sail, leeboards, rudder, canopy, aluminum mast.

Roe is tremendously stable, especially with her flotation collar. I weigh 220lb and I can stand on the gunwhale and can't push it down to water level. She moves along nicely with our 2.5 HP Mercury (not included) and will plane with just me in the boat and a 3.3 HP. She sails fine in most directions but is a poor performer to windward. She would do better with a centerboard but we wanted to keep the interior open for lifeboat use. She rows not badly for her length and beam.

She is incredibly tough, almost indestructible. You can weld and grind while standing in her, drag her across rocky shores without a moment's thought, tie against a nasty concrete wall, carry out anchors without worrying about putting a hole in her, use her as a tender, a tug, a work boat, a life boat, whatever. The 5052 aluminum is totally resistant to salt water corrosion and she is as good as the day she was built. $1200
